Gran Selezione is the top classification in Chianti Classico DOCG. Wines in the Gran Selezione category must be crafted solely from grapes grown by the wineries, be sold 30 months after the harvest the earliest, and have matured in bottle for at least 3 months. It would give more emphasis to the local top-quality wines.
Intense ruby red. Intense nose with hints of wild berries and a well-balanced spicyness. The taste is warm and properly sapid, with ripe red fruit aromas and a long finish. The wine stands out for its elegance, wide-ranging aromas and immense, proven durability, which sees the wine getting better with every year.
The grapes for this wine are selected by hand within the best vineyard of Le Macie estate in Castellina in Chianti. After 10 days of alcoholic fermentation, the must goes through 15 days maceration, and then the wine is transferred into wodden barrels for malolactic fermentation. Aging in French barriques for 18 months. The wine refines another 1 year in the bottle before release.
Rocca delle Macìe is a young and dynamic winery which in a little over 29 years has forged a reputation throughout the wine world as one of Chianti's most highly regarded estates.
It was back in 1973 that Italo Zingarelli at last realized his life-long dream of purchasing the estate "Le Macìe" --about 85 hectares of land of which just two planted with vines-- and transforming it into a winery at the very heart of the Chianti Classico zone.
